Hi there!
You’ve signed up for AEA Conference Workshop “Paradise by the Dashboard Light: A Crash Course in Power BI“. Welcome!
I’m Joe Travers, the workshop facilitator, and I wanted to reach out to you so you can get to know me and we can make sure we’re all ready for the workshop on Nov. 9th at 8 am.
This workshop is designed for complete beginners to Power BI, so do not worry if you’re completely new to it.
First, we’ll all need a couple things for the workshop…
- Power BI Desktop – if you don’t have it yet, you can download it for free from Microsoft here and install it on your laptop. We’ll be building a quick and easy dashboard together (yes, you can build it along with me, all in a couple of hours!) PLEASE let me know if you have any difficulties getting Power BI on your laptop. I will help. If you don’t wish to build an evaluation data dashboard along with me, you are still welcome to attend and watch. I plan on either recording our whole session live if possible or recording a version afterwards with all the good stuff we learn. I’ll send the video to all of you after the workshop. This way, you can refer back to anything and see how I did something.
- Evaluation Data – I’ll be sending this along closer to the workshop. It’ll be a fairly small dataset of evaluation survey data that I modified from an actual evaluation survey. It will be an Excel spreadsheet and it’s nice and easy, but has some little challenges that we’ll learn how to overcome IN the workshop!
What I’m working on:
I’m currently in discussions with Conference organizers about getting a LARGER screen in our workshop room (the ones they have for most rooms are not super big…). I want you ALL to be able to see what I’m doing on screen, because knowing where I click in Power BI to make things happen is essential. I’m also talking to them about getting multiple screens throughout our room if a larger one isn’t possible.
About Me:
I live in Toronto and have worked with data in various parts of the data life cycle for over 20 years. 10 years ago I ran into Dr. Stephanie Evergreen at an Evaluation Conference here in Toronto and since then I’ve learned how to make effective data visualizations and reporting… charts, reports, powerpoints, and data dashboards. I have taken her lessons about building data reporting that focuses on your end user and what they need and applied it to data dashboards.
I’ve used Power BI daily for the last few years, and for the last couple of years, have taught students and clients of Dr. Evergreen as well as my own consulting clients how to build dashboards in Power BI that people can’t help but LOVE.
You can find me on Twitter at @josephtravers, on LinkedIn, on my website traversdata.com (always under construction, haha), and on my new email newsletter about making People-Friendly Power BI reports.
Questions?
Hit that reply button and ask away. Ask about me, about the workshop, about Power BI. I want this workshop and our time together to be as beneficial and as useful to you as possible!
I’d love to hear from you!
Best,
Joe.
